Description:
Although tobacco use and dependence exact a high toll in morbidity, mortality, and finances, clinicians have historically done a poor and inconsistent job of identifying people at risk and providing them with effective treatment options. One study reported that patients with tobacco-related diseases were asked about their smoking status 90% of the time, and that tobacco cessation counseling was provided in 70% of visits to the clinic. But tobacco users treated for a nonpulmonary reason were not questioned or counseled about their tobacco use. This module will familiarize nurses and respiratory care practitioners with information about tobacco use and dependence so that they can address this issue with their patients.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this tobacco continuing education program is to familiarize nurses and respiratory care practitioners with information about tobacco use and dependence. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Describe tobacco use in the U.S., including prevalence, death, and disease rates
• Explain how tobacco causes addiction
• Describe the effects of tobacco on body systems
• Discuss the 10 key recommendations included in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Clinical Practice Guideline for Tobacco Use and Dependence

Additional details will be posted as soon as information is available
