Activity Overview:
Herpes zoster, or shingles, is a painful rash that can have long-lasting ramifications such as postherpetic neuralgia. The only method to protect against shingles and the associated complications is by vaccination. Despite this, patients are often hesitant to be vaccinated. Two vaccines are currently approved and it is imperative for pharmacists to understand the recommendations for each. Serving as immunizers and patient advocates, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to identify eligible patients and help mitigate low vaccination rates in this population.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Express the impact of adult vaccinations on public health
• Explore the burden of disease for herpes zoster (HZ) and the current immunization strategy for prevention
• Identify barriers for increasing HZ vaccination rates, including racial disparities
• Illustrate the role of the pharmacist in HZ vaccination using the Pharmacist Patient Care Process
