As the staggering statistics regarding opioid-related overdoses and prescription misuse continue to climb, the opioid epidemic remains a concerning topic not only for members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, but also for patients and caregivers as well. For this reason, interspersed with this panel discussion is the unique perspective of an individual who has witnessed multiple family members struggle with opioid misuse and abuse. The diverse background of the panel members will foster novel discussion on different aspects of providing pain management, including the progression and impact of the opioid health crisis, the role of quality measures and abuse-deterrent formulations, and the importance of collaborating with different members of the healthcare team.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Examine the challenges of balancing appropriate pain management while addressing the current opioid abuse epidemic
• Explore strategies to prevent opioid misuse and abuse while maintaining legitimate pain control
