Description:
This continuing education course examines the current research on the gut microbiome’s influence on nutritional status. It discusses the relationship between the microbiome and the digestion of macro- and micronutrients. It also reviews research related to the gut microbiome and malnutrition and obesity. It’s designed to help dietitians understand the interplay between the microbiome and nutritional status.

Course content appeared as the CPE Monthly in the March 2020 edition of Today’s Dietitian. 

Learning Objectives:
After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be able to:
• Describe what the gut microbiome is.
• Distinguish the impact of the microbiome on overall nutritional status.
• Translate the role of the gut microbiome in digestion and absorption of macro- and micronutrients.
• Assess how the microbiome influences malnutrition and obesity.
