• Explain the biological mechanisms implicated in the interrelationship between diabetes and periodontal disease.
• Utilizing various screening tools, identify patients who have asymptomatic or poorly controlled diabetes and refer those at risk to the appropriate health care provider.
• Perform HbA1c testing on patients who would benefit from this chairside procedure and assign the appropriate procedural code.
• Determine how patients’ HbA1c results should inform the classification of periodontitis, including staging and grading in patients who have diabetes that is or the stabilization of the reduced periodontium during periodontal maintenance.
