The Biopsychosocial Approaches to Treatment Resistant Depression

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a complex and prevalent clinical challenge affecting up to one-third of patients with major depressive disorder. This CME/CE course delivers a comprehensive exploration of TRD through a biopsychosocial lens, equipping healthcare professionals with the tools and frameworks to understand, evaluate, and manage this difficult-to-treat condition.

Participants will begin by defining TRD and its diagnostic criteria—typically marked by the failure to respond to at least two adequate antidepressant trials. Emerging evidence for novel antidepressants such as esketamine and ketamine infusions is also reviewed, with attention to safety, monitoring, and real-world application.

Non-pharmacological treatments are covered in depth, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and lifestyle-based interventions like exercise, nutrition, and sleep hygiene. The importance of engaging patients in shared decision-making and personalizing interventions based on individual risk-benefit profiles is stressed throughout.
