Talking to Patients about Using the Nutrition Facts Label to Make Healthful Eating Choices is organized by American Medical Association (AMA) and will be held from Jun 21, 2016 - Jun 21, 2019.

The target audience for this medical event is primary care physicians. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.

Conference Description:
The learning model for this CME is an educational video for physicians. The online module, developed in collaboration with the FDA, includes information about the nutrition facts label and provides physicians guidance on how to discuss nutrition labels with patients.

Studies indicate that a gap remains between the proportion of patients who physicians believe would benefit from nutrition counseling and those who actually receive it from their primary care physician. Barriers to physician counseling include lack of knowledge, training, and resources in medical nutrition. There is a need to provide education to physicians with strategies to help enhance their knowledge of the Nutrition Facts Label so that physicians can feel better prepared to provide nutrition counseling to their patients as needed.

Not all physicians have the means to refer their patients to allied health professionals for such nutrition counseling, and not all patients have the means to access such allied health professionals. Promotion of a healthful diet logically includes a basic understanding of how to read a Nutrition Facts Label. Improved knowledge of the Nutrition Facts label will aid physicians in counseling their patients about a healthful diet. This module will improve nutritional counseling skills for physicians.

Conference Objectives are:
• Review the purpose of the Nutrition Facts Label as regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
• Explain the meaning of a serving size, calorie, % Daily Value and the Ingredients list on a Nutrition Facts Label
• Recognize the various nutrients within the Nutrition Facts Label
• Teach patients how to use the Nutrition Facts Label
