• In Pre-habilitation and Medical Optimization for the Surgical Patient: The Role of the Obesity Specialist, Dr. Rodney Voisine discusses working with pre- and post-operative bariatric surgery patients.

• In Clinical and Surgical Obesity Medicine Collaboration: Dr. Ponce will outline the present landscape of bariatric surgery and present strategies useful to bridging the gap that currently exists in many communities between the bariatric surgeon and obesity medicine clinician.

• In Surgery (Fall 2014): Dr. Clark will discuss the post-operative anatomy and its impact on nutrition; identify appropriate laboratory evaluation techniques of post-operative patients; review vitamin deficiencies and replacement therapies for each deficiency; identify immediate post-operative complications; review medication adjustments post-operatively; and review long-term post-operative complications, and therapy.

• In Using Pharmacotherapy as a Treatment after Weight-loss Surgery: Dr. Thomas Clark will discuss the benefits of prescribing a weight-management medication to a patient who has undergone a surgical weight-loss procedure. He will explain how medication can help post-operative patients maintain their weight loss.

• In Recidivism after Bariatric Surgery: Dr. Halmi will discuss why recidivism occurs and provide strategies to overcome it in the bariatric surgical patient.

Presentation Objectives:
• Understand the following aspects of pathophysiology: neuroendocrine modulators of hunger and obesity, central neurotransmitters, peripheral afferent signals, metabolic syndrome obesity and inflammation, adipose tissue as an endocrine organ, hormones of metabolism regulation.
• Review challenges of the patient affected by obesity in the operating room.
• Discuss benefits of pre-habilitation on 3 systems and review recommended interventions to achieve desired outcomes.
• Understand how modest weight-loss and fitness interventions can reduce systemic inflammation and pain.
• Review impact of obesity on 3 systems (cardiovascular, pulmonary, and respiratory).
• Use pharmacotherapy as part of post-bariatric surgery treatment.
• Define pre-habilitation and discuss relevance in populations affected by obesity.
• Understand the importance of the relationship between clinicians and surgeons when treating patients affected by obesity.
• Explain the principles behind how bariatric surgery works, the specific procedures, and how bariatric surgery changes the anatomy of the GI tract, and affects nutrient absorption.
• Identify post-operative complications with bariatric surgery, and treatment options.
• Discuss the short- and long-term effects of bariatric surgery.
• Describe strategies to treat weight regain after bariatric surgery.
• Understand the various factors influencing recidivism.
