Overview:
Suicide is the tenth-leading cause of death in the United States. A systems-level response to suicidal risk assessment within the inpatient healthcare setting can make a major difference in clinical suicide prevention. This course is designed to prepare medical practitioners for patients at any level of suicidality – passive thoughts to severe – by providing evidence-based screening tools, treatment protocols and available resources in daily practice to assess and treat patients at risk for suicide.

Samaritan Physicians: Successful completion of this activity will qualify Samaritan physicians for annual policy discounts. Upon completion, please print your certificate and submit it to Samaritan for consideration.

Learning Objectives:
• Utilize evidence-based screening tools to identify patients at risk for suicide.
• Determine risk and protective factors, recognize “hidden” signs and symptoms and identify the relationship between substance use and suicide.
• Implement appropriate treatment protocols for patients identified with suicidal thoughts, plans or ideations. 
• Coordinate with key staff involved in patient safety for the care of patients at risk for suicide. 
• Easily locate tools and resources to better support patients at risk for suicide.
