Objectives:

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

• Describe the current trends associated with the prevalence of substance use disorders.
• Explain the neuroscience related to substance use disorders.
• Discuss the choice argument vs. disease model of substance use disorders.
• Compare and contrast substance use disorders with other chronic diseases.
• Explore the role of stigma as a barrier to treatment.
• Describe the mechanism of action for categories of commonly misused substances.
• List the primary adverse effects for categories of commonly misused substances.
• List the primary withdrawal symptoms for categories of commonly misuse substances.
• Utilize the PDMP and pre-screening questions to identify patients at risk for substance use disorders.
• Apply appropriate screening instruments to further refine and define the level of risk for substance use disorders.
• Explore patient cases that illustrate the administration and interpretation of screening instruments for substance use disorders.
• Describe the various frameworks that can be employed in motivational interviewing approaches.
• Employ tools such as the readiness ruler, decisional matrix, and reflection that can be utilized in motivational interviewing.
• Explore example cases that illustrate motivational interviewing and the warm hand-off process for patients who may  need treatment for or require  treatment for a substance use disorder.
• Participate as a health care provider in a mock screening and intervention for a patient at risk for a substance use disorder.
• Play the role of a patient in a mock screening and intervention for an individual at risk for a substance use disorder.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of a fellow peer in a mock screening and intervention for a patient at risk for a substance use disorder utilizing a rubric.
• Participate in a debriefing session for the mock screening and intervention exercise.
• Identify educational resources and materials relative to substance use disorders that can be made available for distribution at the practice setting.
• Build a list of area resources and referrals relative to substance use disorders that can be made available for distribution at the practice setting.
• Identify a contact and referral list that can be accessed for a warm hand-off.
• Design a protocol for the practice site that can be followed when encountering an individual at risk for a substance use disorder.
• Identify appropriate billing codes for substance use disorder treatment planning.
• Discuss proper documentation and follow-up for substance use disorder treatment planning.
