OVERVIEW

#7122 Strategies for Managing Hip Pain and Total Hip Replacement is organized by MotivationsCEU.

Description:
This 2-hour interactive lecture provides practical, evidence-informed strategies for managing hip pain and total hip replacement across the lifespan. Designed for physical therapists in hospital and outpatient settings, the session emphasizes differential diagnosis, surgical considerations, and lifespan-specific rehabilitation strategies. Attendees will review the prevalence and causes of joint-related hip pain, learn to apply validated diagnostic tests, and explore the nuances of various hip replacement procedures—including approach-specific precautions and rehabilitation priorities. Special attention is given to post-operative treatment phases, identifying when to progress vs. when to be cautious, and using functional testing to guide safe return to independence or higher-level activity. The lecture incorporates live demonstrations, case-based examples, and outcome measure integration to support efficient, individualized, and goaldriven patient care.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the prevalence, incidence, and common causes of hip pain across older and younger adult populations.
  • Explain the differential diagnosis process and apply validated diagnostic tests relevant to hip osteoarthritis and surgical candidacy.
  • Summarize the types of hip replacement procedures, including approach-specific considerations and their rehabilitation implications.
  • Summarize evidence-based post-operative treatment progressions from acute care to outpatient rehabilitation.
  • Explain key indicators for when to advance rehabilitation and when to exercise caution in both older and younger THA patients.
  • Describe functional outcome measures and performance tests used to guide progression and discharge planning.
