Statement of Need:
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by destruction of both upper and lower motor neurons, leading to progressive muscle weakness, paralysis, and death. While no curative options exist, initiating disease-modifying treatment at symptom onset can help to slow the neurodegenerative process of disease progression, significantly ease symptoms, and improve quality of life (Tzeplaeff et al, 2023). Delays in diagnosis hinder early treatment initiation, with an average discrepancy of 9 to 12 months between disease onset and diagnosis. Therefore, it is crucial for members of the ALS care team to remain up to date on strategies for early diagnosis, considerations for selecting disease-modifying therapies, and approaches for enhancing interdisciplinary care. This activity, presented by Richard S. Bedlack, MD, PhD, MS, the Stewart, Hughes and Wendt Distinguished Professor of ALS, Professor of Neurology, and Director of the Duke ALS Clinic at Duke University School of Medicine, will explore strategies for reducing diagnostic delays, slowing disease progression, and optimizing quality of life for patients with ALS.
