OVERVIEW

Sleep disorders are increasingly recognized as significant contributors to diminished quality of life, mental health deterioration, and chronic disease progression across all age groups. This CME/CE course delivers a comprehensive and structured approach to evaluating, diagnosing, and treating a broad spectrum of sleep disorders, from common disruptions to complex neurological conditions.

Participants will begin by exploring foundational concepts such as sleepiness, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), hypersomnia, and insomnia. These states are often symptoms of fragmented or insufficient sleep, circadian rhythm disorders, or underlying neurological conditions. The course guides clinicians in distinguishing between these concepts to support diagnostic accuracy.

Next, the course delves into arousal disorders, including confusional arousals, sleepwalking (somnambulism), and sleep terrors. Participants will learn how these parasomnias manifest differently across pediatric and adult populations, and how to assess risk factors, evaluate comorbidities, and initiate referrals to sleep specialists.

Detailed instruction is provided on the recognition, evaluation, and evidence-based treatment of REM Behavior Disorder (RBD), Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), and Pediatric Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD). The course addresses age-related differences in symptom presentation and treatment response, providing actionable tools to tailor care to patient-specific needs.

The module also provides a clinical framework for identifying narcolepsy, with particular focus on diagnostic criteria (e.g., Multiple Sleep Latency Test), symptoms like cataplexy, and treatment strategies including stimulant therapy, wake-promoting agents, and sodium oxybate.

Clinicians will also explore innovative treatment modalities—ranging from cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to pharmacological advances—offering practical pathways to reduce symptom burden and restore functional health. By the end of this program, learners will be equipped to provide holistic, patient-centered care that addresses sleep quality, comorbid conditions, and daily function across diverse populations.

Educational Objectives

  • Define key concepts such as sleepiness, excessive sleepiness, and hypersomnia, including underlying etiologies like fragmented or insufficient sleep.
  • Identify and manage arousal disorders, including sleepwalking, confusional arousals, and night terrors, with emphasis on referral and treatment pathways.
  • Recognize the presentation and treatment of REM Behavior Disorder, Restless Leg Syndrome, and Pediatric Periodic Limb Movement Disorder across age groups.
  • Diagnose and treat narcolepsy using established clinical and polysomnographic criteria, including management of associated cataplexy.
  • Evaluate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic innovations in sleep disorder management to improve patient outcomes and functionality.

Who Should Do This Course?

This course is appropriate for:

  • Neurologists, Psychiatrists, and Sleep Medicine Specialists managing complex and refractory sleep disorders.
  • Pulmonologists addressing sleep-disordered breathing and related arousal conditions.
  • Primary Care and Family Medicine Physicians serving as first-line evaluators of sleep complaints.
  • Pediatricians and Geriatricians assessing age-specific sleep disturbances across the lifespan.
  • Nurse Practitioners and Behavioral Health Providers delivering multidisciplinary sleep care or counseling.

It is particularly relevant for clinicians integrating sleep health into chronic disease prevention, behavioral health, or neurologic care.

Did You Know?

  • Untreated sleep disorders can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression. (Sleep, 2021)
  • Narcolepsy affects approximately 1 in 2,000 individuals, with many cases going undiagnosed for years. (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2023)
  • Restless Leg Syndrome is more common in women and tends to worsen with age. (Journal of Sleep Research, 2020)
  • Sleepwalking affects up to 17% of children but typically resolves by adolescence. (American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2021)
  • CBT-I has a 70-80% efficacy rate for treating chronic insomnia, often outperforming pharmacotherapy. (Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2022)
