Description:
This session is a comprehensive discussion of three autoimmune diseases that may present within the critical care setting. The unique aspects of care of each case type and the complexities of needed plan of care are delineated. The Synergy model of matching nurse competencies to a patient is the basis for each case illustration. These three specific case studies are autoimmune hepatitis, catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome and pregnancy with lupus are discussed to illustrate the intricacies of the care of these patients. Emphasis is placed on pharmacology and the impact within immune processes.

Objectives:
• Discuss a comprehensive set of evidence-based decision points when providing care to the patient presentation of an autoimmune disease.
• Provide a synopsis of factors in play with autoimmune hepatitis, Catastrophic Antiphospholipid Syndrome and lupus and pregnancy.
• Distinguish the sites in the autoimmune dysregulation where different pharmacological agents are utilized.
