OVERVIEW

Seizure Management in the NICU is organized by The Pediatrix Center for Research, Education, Quality and Safety (CREQS).

Date & Location:
Friday, September 8, 2023, 8:00 AM - Monday, September 7, 2026, 11:59 PM

Overview:
Not every neonatologist may be familiar with the clinical approach and the conceptual understanding of neonatal seizures from the neurologist's perspective. Understanding the neurologist's approach will help facilitate teamwork and optimal neurological outcome for the baby. At the conclusion of the activity, participants will appropriately implement at least one new strategy, technique(s) or intervention(s) in seizure management.

ACCME Objectives:

  • Describe the different types of neonatal seizures and their semiology.
  • Discuss the causes of neonatal seizures and how to diagnose these diseases and disorders.
  • Identify potentially treatable but otherwise catastrophic encephalopathies that present with neonatal seizures.
  • Characterize the antiseizure medications commonly used to treat newborns and analyze their relative strengths and weaknesses.

ANCC Learning Outcomes:

  • Discuss the causes of neonatal seizures and how to diagnose these diseases and disorders.
  • Identify potentially treatable but otherwise catastrophic encephalopathies that present with neonatal seizures.
