This module provides perioperative healthcare professionals with information about the challenges of and effective strategies for medication and solution labeling in the perioperative setting. It discusses the intent of The Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goal NPSG.03.04.01, involving labeling medications and solutions on and off the sterile field and identifies the challenges for safe medication administration unique to the perioperative environment. Strategies for effective medication and solution labeling on and off the sterile field are included. Failures in patient care processes and systems still occur and can result in errors in patient care. Perioperative clinicians and pharmacists must be knowledgeable about these concepts so they can promote patient safety and desirable outcomes.
Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide perioperative nurses, surgical technologists, and pharmacists with information about the challenges of and effective strategies for medication and solution labeling in the perioperative setting.
