OVERVIEW

Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Older Adults: Burden, Diagnosis, and Prevention Strategies for Primary Care is organized by Healio and Vindico Medical Education will be held from Jun 20, 2022 - Jun 19, 2023.

Activity Description:
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a highly prevalent, contagious respiratory infection and a leading cause of bronchitis and pneumonia. Although most cases manifest clinically as mild to moderate upper respiratory disease, severe sequelae can occur. RSV infections can be dangerous for elderly and high-risk adults, leading to complications such as pneumonia, worsening of preexisting pulmonary conditions, and congestive heart failure. In this activity, experts will examine the burden of RSV infection in older adults, including risk factors for severe disease. Faculty will review diagnostic challenges and criteria for detecting RSV, as well as outline strategies preventing RSV in older adults—highlighting recent evidence for vaccines in late-stage development.

Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
• Examine the burden and complications of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in older adults, including the risk factors for the development of severe disease.
• Describe the diagnostic challenges and criteria for the detection of RSV.
• Review strategies for the prevention of RSV, including recent evidence for vaccines in development.
