Recognizing signs of domestic violence within a clinical setting can be a challenging and difficult task when faced with the possibility. Dr. Harrison’s presentation covers the background and prevalence of domestic violence as well as pertinent clinical pearls including screening tools and diagnostic approach, signs and symptoms and finally the importance of creating a comfortable atmosphere conducive to disclosure in a clinical setting. 

Educational Objectives:

1. Define intimate partner violence and provide a framework for the continuum of abuse across the lifespan.
2. Cite prevalence of abuse and violence.
3. Describe screening tools and diagnostic questions, and how to assess patients in a culturally sensitive manner.
4. Discuss signs and symptoms that should alert a provider to the possibility of abuse.
5. Explore the importance of creating an atmosphere conducive to disclosure in a clinical setting.
6. Identify community resources for victims of violence.
