Course Description:
Edema occurs when tiny capillaries leak fluid and the fluid builds up in surrounding tissues, leading to swelling. Many people may have mild edema, such as from sitting too long, eating too much salt, or being pregnant. Lower-leg edema can also occur in many diseases, including heart failure, kidney disease, chronic venous insufficiency, cirrhosis, obesity, and as a result of cancer treatment. This module informs nurses about various types of compression and when to apply them in the management of lower-limb edema.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this continuing education program is to inform nurses about various types of compression and when to apply them in the management of lower-limb edema. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Identify three types of lower-limb edema
• Describe five assessment parameters used to determine whether compression is appropriate
• Discuss two basic types of compression available
