OVERVIEW

Probiotics: Dietary Sources and Supplements is organized by Western Schools and will be held from Sep 27, 2017 - Sep 30, 2020. This Course has been approved for a maximum of 2.00 Contact Hours.

Description:
Probiotic use quadrupled between 2007 and the 2012 NHIS (Black et al., 2015). The 2012 NHIS found that approximately 4 million (1.6%) U.S. adults and 300,000 children ages 4 to 17 (0.5%) had used probiotics or prebiotics (Black et al., 2015; Clarke et al., 2015). Probiotics or prebiotics were the third most commonly used dietary supplement by adults, not including vitamins and minerals. Many users have been proposed for probiotics. Nurses who are knowledgeable can assist consumers in evaluating the resources, information, and scientific literature on probiotics to make choices with regard to their use, dose, adverse effects, interactions, and product quality.

Course Objectives:
• Review the background and history of probiotics.
• Describe common uses of using clinical evidence for their effectiveness.
• Identify common adverse effects and safety concerns when using probiotics and prebiotics.
• Apply nursing considerations of probiotic use in patient education.
• Compare the use of probiotics in dietary supplements to foods sources in support of patients’ self-care.

Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
