OVERVIEW

Potassium in the Balance: Cardiovascular Risks, Diet, and Novel Interventions in Hyperkalemia Care is organized by National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

Available From: 8/7/2026, 9:30 AM
Available Until: 8/11/2026, 9:30 AM

Description:
Potassium-binding agents may provide an important alternative, as they are effective in both treating and preventing chronic hyperkalemia, while permitting the continued use of beneficial cardiorenal therapies despite their potassium-raising effects. This session will review current advances in hyperkalemia management within the framework of contemporary cardiorenal treatment strategies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze the cardiovascular risks associated with hyperkalemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular comorbidities
  • Differentiate the impact of dietary potassium—including natural sources and food additives—on outcomes, recognizing both its benefits in low-risk individuals and hazards in patients predisposed to hyperkalemia
  • Apply evidence on the use of newer potassium binders to optimize the management of hyperkalemia and improve safety in CKD care.
