Peer review includes the use of evidence-based practice and professional standards to evaluate the nursing practice of a peer. Peer review is essential for being a part of a profession, but few healthcare organizations have meaningful nursing peer review. Nursing has lagged behind other professional groups, especially physicians, in creating a peer-review agenda. Authentic nursing peer review requires the use of evidence-based standards by all nurses, regardless of role or practice setting. Current research demonstrates that most healthcare organizations do not have evidence-based peer-review processes for nurses in all settings and levels.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this continuing education program is to inform nurses about the evidence-based peer-review process in nursing. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Describe the role of peer review in professional practice
• Discuss the role of peer review in creating and sustaining quality and safety outcomes
• Explain evidence-based practice principles for nursing peer-review activities in a contemporary model of nursing practice
