OVERVIEW

Pediatric headaches are a common complaint in emergency and primary care settings. Yet, they present unique diagnostic challenges due to variations in symptom presentation, communication limitations in younger children, and the broad differential diagnoses ranging from benign to life-threatening causes. This comprehensive CE course is designed specifically for healthcare professionals—including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurses—working in pediatrics, family medicine, neurology, or emergency medicine. It aims to equip learners with the clinical acumen necessary to recognize typical and atypical headache patterns in children, distinguish between serious causes and benign primary headache disorders, and implement effective treatment strategies. The course guides taking a thorough pediatric headache history, identifying red flags, and determining when neuroimaging or specialist referral is warranted. It also addresses updated pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches, emphasizing the importance of family education and long-term management in recurrent pediatric headache disorders, such as migraines and tension-type headaches. Participants will complete this activity with improved diagnostic confidence, streamlined treatment plans, and an enhanced ability to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care to pediatric patients experiencing headaches.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe typical presentations of headache in children, including common symptoms and variations by age group.
  • Review how to differentiate acute and potentially serious etiologies from benign, primary headache disorders.
  • Discuss obtaining a comprehensive pediatric headache history, including red flags that warrant further evaluation.
  • Outline evidence-based treatment options, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, for pediatric headache management.
  • Evaluate indications for imaging and specialist referrals in children presenting with headaches.
