Course Description:
Parkinson's Disease: Disease, Progression, Dysphagia and Treatment provides an overview of the disease process, theories behind the disease and impact on the whole patient. Diagnosis, symptoms, medications, use of complimentary alternative (CAM) and potential side effects will be outlined. The seminar will provide a detailed review of dysphagia intervent including behavioral, rehabilitation, sensorial, compensatory methods, adaptive equipment and mealtime strategies.
Course Goals:
This course is intended to improve understanding of disease progression, impact on swallow, therapeutic strategies and modifications for nutrition.
Professional Objectives:
• List the symptoms of PD and the impact these have on the swallow and nutrition
• Identify the impact of medications and CAM on PD and the swallow
• Identify specific therapeutic interventions and mealtime strategies that will improve swallow efficiency, safety and improve nutrition.
