Description:
Pain neuroscience education (PNE) has gained much notice and favor in the last twenty years for its use in educating patients about their pain. This course will present a general overview of PNE, defining terms surrounding PNE and reviewing the evidence of PNE’s use in treating chronic pain. In addition, the predictors for chronic pain and indicators for the use of PNE will be outlined, along with contributors to the chronic pain experience. Possible interventions, along with PNE, that can affect and mitigate painful symptoms, will be described.

Hospital for Special Surgery continuing education activities are intended to improve the quality of patient care and safety. At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

• Review the basics of current thoughts on pain neuroscience?
• Describe the current understanding of pain physiology in chronic pain?
• Define common terms used in pain neuroscience theory?
• Discuss educational points and approaches for patient education?
• Apply treatment approaches, including exercise, for chronic pain?.
