Description:
Xylazine is a non-opioid used as a sedative for animals and is gaining emergence across the USA. Xylazine is most often found mixed into opioids like fentanyl to extend the effects. Many individuals including healthcare professionals are not familiar with this substance and its adverse effects. This presentation will review the best practices in identifying people using xylazine, providing access to care and treatment, and effective policies that will address the issue.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Discuss an overview of xylazine, including its history, structure, pharmacology, clinical effects, emerging epidemiology, and ethnographic research with individuals using xylazine
• Discuss xylazine's contribution to overdoses, intervention strategies, and harm reduction strategies for xylazine use
• Discuss toxicology testing and drug checking strategies for xylazine Discuss wounds due to xylazine use
• Discuss xylazine withdrawal and its management strategies
