OVERVIEW

Overcoming Implicit Bias in Clinical Practice (CNE) is organized by Niel Asher Education.

Overcoming Implicit Bias in Clinical Practice:
A practical continuing nursing education course focused on recognising implicit bias, strengthening reflective practice, improving communication, and supporting more equitable patient care.

Course Description:
Implicit bias can influence clinical judgement, communication, pain assessment, diagnostic reasoning, triage decisions, treatment recommendations, documentation, patient trust, and access to care. These effects may occur even when clinicians are committed to fairness and professionalism. This course helps nurses recognise how unconscious assumptions can shape everyday practice and how small, deliberate changes can improve patient experience and clinical decision-making.

The course is designed to be practical rather than accusatory. Learners explore common sources of bias, moments where bias may enter clinical encounters, the importance of respectful communication, strategies for slowing down automatic assumptions, and ways to strengthen accountability within teams. The emphasis is on awareness, reflection, safer systems, and consistent patient-centred care.

What You Will Learn:

  • Bias Recognition:
Understand how implicit bias may affect perception, listening, pain response, risk assessment, diagnosis, care planning, and professional interactions.
  • Reflective Practice:
Use structured self-reflection to notice assumptions, emotional shortcuts, stereotype activation, time-pressure effects, and patterns in clinical decision-making.
  • Communication and Trust:
Apply respectful, patient-centred communication strategies that support validation, shared understanding, informed consent, and dignity across diverse patient populations.
  • Safer Systems:
Consider documentation, handover, escalation, team culture, policies, and feedback processes that can reduce the impact of bias on patient outcomes.

Course Pathway:
The learning pathway moves from awareness into practical clinical application, helping nurses recognise where bias may enter care and how to respond with reflection, communication, and team-based accountability.

Recognise:
Notice where assumptions, stereotypes, stress, fatigue, time pressure, or incomplete information may affect judgement.

Pause:
Slow automatic thinking before important assessments, communication moments, documentation, or escalation decisions.

Listen:
Use respectful questions, validate patient concerns, and check understanding before drawing conclusions.

Act Fairly:
Apply consistent standards, evidence-informed care, clear communication, and appropriate advocacy.

Review:
Reflect on outcomes, documentation, patient feedback, team patterns, and opportunities for improvement.
