Description:
This module is the second of 11 modules in the Nutrition Related Care in Paediatric Diabetes Evergreen course. The aim of this module is to review care and management of diabetes in children and adolescents. We will review the role and scope of the dietitian and the interdisciplinary team, as well as the importance of working with family and developmental stages to provide support, individualise care and promote self-management in children and adolescents living with diabetes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the considerations which are unique to diabetes care in children and adolescents
  • Recognize the importance of interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary care in the management of paediatric diabetes
  • Explain the role and scope of practice of a dietitian working with individuals with children and adolescents with diabetes
  • Describe the role of different health professionals within the multidisciplinary team in paediatric diabetes care
  • Describe how to collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to children and adolescents with diabetes and their families
  • Explain the importance of family involvement as a vital component of optimal diabetes management throughout childhood and adolescence
  • Identify the importance of providing children/adolescents and their parent/carers with developmentally appropriate and individualized diabetes self-management education and support at diagnosis and routinely thereafter
