Description:
This module is the last of 11 modules in the Nutrition Related Care in Paediatric Diabetes Evergreen course. The aim of this module is to review the management of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents. We will review the role of nutrition and lifestyle, dietary modifications, medication options and glycaemic targets for children and adolescents living with type 2 diabetes. We will also discuss common comorbidities of type 2 diabetes and review specific considerations for management of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain the key considerations in the management of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents
  • Describe the role of nutrition and lifestyle modification in the management of children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes
  • Identify the dietary modification and medication options for children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes
  • Describe the recommended glycaemic targets for children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes
  • Identify common comorbidities in children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes including hypertension, dyslipidaemia, OSA, NAFLD and PCOS
  • Identify specific considerations for management of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds
