OVERVIEW

Nuclear Cardiology Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (NCKSAP): Ventricular Function, 3rd Edition is organized by American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC).

Release Date: September 18, 2023
Expiration Date: September 18, 2026

Course Overview:
This is a self-assessment CME activity in online format consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. Each question includes an answer rationale and references for further studying. This module will be updated every 3 years. It is designed for practitioners who are performing nuclear imaging studies and want to increase their competence for certification, recertification or general practice improvement.

Overall Goal:
The overall goal of this activity is to provide a comprehensive review of nuclear cardiology imaging procedures and best practices and increase physicians’ competence and performance in their ability to improve cardiovascular disease outcomes.

Statement of Need:
An estimated 80 Million American adults (approximately 1 in 3) have 1 or more types of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with over 30 Million estimated to be under 60 years of age. According to the Centers for Disease Control “Heart Disease Fact Sheet”, in 2006 heart disease was the leading cause of death for both men and women and a total of 26% - or more than one in every four - of all deaths were caused by heart disease. Further, in the United States, one person has a heart attack every 34 seconds and one person dies from a heart disease-related event every minute.

Learner Objectives:
Upon completion of this module, learner will be able to:

  • Understand the role and practical aspects of equilibrium radionuclide ventriculography in assessing left ventricular function
  • Understand the role of gated SPECT and PET in coronary artery disease and non ischemic cardiomyopathies
  • Identify the implications of left ventricular function testing for clinical management
  • Understand how arrhythmias can affect ECG gating
