OVERVIEW

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and other neuromodulation techniques are transforming the therapeutic landscape for neurological disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease. This CME/CE course offers a comprehensive look at the indications, mechanisms, clinical applications, and innovations in neuromodulation, equipping clinicians with the tools to provide advanced, evidence-based care for these challenging conditions.

Participants will begin by exploring the historical development of DBS and its established role in managing movement disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease. The course details how stimulation of specific brain targets—such as the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and globus pallidus internus (GPi)—can lead to substantial improvements in motor function, tremor control, and quality of life.

For epilepsy, DBS is now an FDA-approved treatment for medically refractory cases. Learners will study the mechanism of action behind thalamic stimulation (e.g., anterior nucleus of the thalamus), understand the clinical selection criteria for DBS candidates, and review outcomes from major clinical trials such as the SANTE trial.

The course also explores emerging neuromodulation technologies, including responsive neurostimulation (RNS), non-invasive brain stimulation (like transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS), and closed-loop DBS systems.
