Description:
Methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant similar in structure to amphetamine. Methamphetamine is classified as a Schedule II drug, which means it has a high potential for abuse and psychological or physical dependence. Although methamphetamine may be prescribed by physicians or advanced practice nurses (if permitted under their state practice act), its medical uses are limited, and the doses prescribed are much lower than those typically used in abuse. When prescribed, it is available only through a prescription that cannot be refilled. Nonprescription methamphetamine is manufactured internationally and imported into the U.S. as well as manufactured in clandestine laboratories throughout the U.S.

Methamphetamine abuse has been associated with toxic effects on the brain including damage to the dopaminergic and serotonergic cells. Psychosis, depression, delusions, and violent behavior have occurred with methamphetamine abuse. This module will provide nurses with information about methamphetamine, including short- and long-term effects, high-risk groups, and treatment strategies.

• Summarize the physiological effects of methamphetamine intoxication and abuse
• Describe the long-term psychological consequences of methamphetamine abuse
• Give examples of treatment strategies for methamphetamine abuse and addiction
