Course Description:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been identified as the leading cause of nontraumatic disability in young adults. The unpredictable course of disease creates a substantial impact on quality of life for those living with MS and significant economic burden to the healthcare system when patients experience relapses or progression. Unfortunately, MS is incurable; however, there are several disease-modifying treatments that can alter progression of this incapacitating illness. Recent approvals have added to the armamentarium of available agents, and careful selection is necessary to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Managed care and specialty pharmacists should be aware of the current treatment landscape as well as the cost implications to best develop a benefits design strategy and treatment plans that can minimize the economic burden and optimize care.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Examine the impact of multiple sclerosis (MS) on a patient’s quality of life and the burden to the healthcare system.
• Explain the value of early diagnosis and the relationship to long-term outcomes for patients with MS.
• Investigate the efficacy of current and emerging treatments to reduce and prevent relapse.
• Analyze the available HEOR and phase IV data of MS treatments.
• Identify practices that managed care professionals and specialty pharmacists can take to help improve outcomes and mitigate disease progression.
