This activity is intended for primary care physicians, hospitalists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Other healthcare providers with an interest in adult immunizations may also benefit from the information presented.

Credits Available:
Southern Medical Association designates this enduring material for a maximum of  .75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

All healthcare professionals who are not MDs or DOs will receive a certificate of participation.

Goals and Objectives:
Antibiotics are commonly prescribed in the outpatient setting. Although they can benefit patients with many different types of infection, antibiotics can also cause harm if they are inappropriately prescribed. This includes adverse reactions, increasing antimicrobial resistance, and raising healthcare costs. As such, it is imperative that clinicians optimally prescribe antibiotics when they are indicated, and not prescribe them when they are not needed. This session will use cases to illustrate how to optimally treat numerous outpatient infections. At the conclusion of the session, learners should be better prepared to:

• Prescribe oral antibiotics appropriately in the outpatient setting;
• Review the clinical indications of commonly used oral antimicrobial agents;
• Distinguish viral from bacterial etiologies so that antibiotic prescribing is reduced in the outpatient setting.
