Topic 2: Treatment of Hyperglycemia in Type 2 Diabetes (Non-Insulin)

• Understand the glucose targets in T2DM.
• Employ the current ADA Guidelines for pharmacological therapy.
• Develop individualized therapeutic regimens to optimize glycemic control.

Topic 3: Treatment of Hyperglycemia in Type 2 Diabetes (Insulin)

• Recognize indications for the initiation of insulin replacement therapy for people with T2DM.
• Describe clinically relevant properties of the available insulins and insulin combinations.
• Individualize and advance insulin therapy to optimize glycemic control.

Topic 1: Anemia. Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, COMP
• Develop a diagnostic strategy to ascertain the etiology of the anemia.
• Utilize the guidelines for diagnosing anemia in children and adults in terms of available testing.
• Develop a clinical approach to treating various anemias to include Iron Deficiency and “Anemia of Chronic Disease” due to infections, inflammatory dz’s, CKD, Malignancies, Cytokines, Interferons, TNF’s, etc.
• Describe the role of consultants in the evaluation and management of anemia.

Topic 2: Demystifying Transfusion.  Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: COMP
• Identify and anticipate which patients are at risk for transfusion complications.
• Recognize and manage transfusion complications.
• Outline options and indications for special blood products to be used for transfusion.

Topic 3: Arterial Blood Gas: A Six Step Approach to Rapid Interpretation. Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: COMP
• Distinguish and determine the type of acid base disturbance – Acidosis and Alkalosis.
• Determine the anion gap and its role in defining and treating acid base disorders.
• Assess osmolal gap and urine anion gap.
• Develop the management of acid base disorders by a case based discussion.

Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: EBM, COMP
• Differentiate the presentation of various cases of pneumonia and management.
• Distinguish the different pathogens that cause pneumonia.
• Apply evidence-based recommendations for prevention of pneumococcal pneumonia.
• Plan the approach to health care associated pneumonia.

Topic 2: Pleural Diseases: Effusions and Pneumothorax.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, COMP
• Determine the etiology of various pleural effusions by means of cases.
• Formulate the investigation and management of pleural effusions.
• Detect the presentation of pneumothorax.
• Develop the clinical approach to management of pneumothorax using the ACCP Delphi Guidelines.

Topic 3: Non-Invasive Ventilation and Oxygenation in Respiratory Failure.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, COMP
• Review the indications for NIV in acute respiratory failure.
• Understand the benefits and risks of NIV.
• Discuss the strategies for initiation of NIV and monitoring response.
• Discuss the use of NIV on the wards, outside of the ICU setting.
• Briefly review NIV use in COVID-19 patients.

Topic 1: Incidentalomas: Dealing With Unexpected Abnormal Findings on Radiologic Exams.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: EBM, COMP
• Apply an evidence-based approach to determine the need for further evaluation of abnormalities found incidentally on imaging tests.
• Distinguish cystic renal masses that need imaging follow up from those that do not.
• Select appropriate further imaging when needed for small adrenal masses.

Topic 2: Contrast and Radiation Issues in Radiology: What a Clinician Should Know.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: EBM, GL, COMP
• Utilize evidence based guidelines to appropriately order intravenous contrast for CT scans for patients with impaired renal function.
• Apply evidence based guidelines to decide whether it is safe to order intravenous contrast for MRI examinations.
• Describe factors leading to increased radiation exposure to patients from medical imaging.
• Select appropriate tests to order so as to minimize patient radiation dose without sacrificing diagnostic accuracy.

Topic 3: Ultrasound Basics.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: COMP  EBM GL
• Discuss commonly used terms in ultrasound.
• Determine in which clinical settings, based on the SRU Consensus Statement, ultrasound is the most appropriate study to order.
• Recognize US findings for common diseases/diagnoses.

Topic 1: Osteoporosis.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, EBM, COMP
• Detect patients who are at risk for osteoporosis.
• Recognize the need for bone density testing as recommended by the International Society of Clinical Densitomethy and the National Osteoporosis • Foundation guidelines.
• Differentiate the nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatments for osteoporosis as recommended by the National Osteoporosis Foundation guidelines.

Topic 2: Scleroderma and Raynaud's Disease.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, COMP
• Specify the clinical manifestations of scleroderma.
• Apply the ACR/EULAR classification criteria for systemic sclerosis.
• Utilize treatment available for symptomatic manifestations as per the current EULAR recommendations.
• Apply the diagnostic work-up and treatment of Raynaud’s Phenomenon.

Topic 3: Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to: GL, COMP
• Demonstrate the role of genetics, environmental factors, immune cells, and proinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.
• Illustrate the clinical features, extra-articular manifestations, and complications of rheumatoid arthritis.
• Utilize and compare various methods of measuring disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.
• Compare and contrast the mechanisms of action of current and emerging therapies for RA and prescribe treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis according to ACR guidelines.
