Overview:
In this 1-hour presentation, Dr. Charles Vega discusses the science behind multicancer early detection (MCED) testing and explores the benefits and limitations of MCED tests available for clinical use and undergoing investigation in clinical trials. Faculty also share practical clinical information on integrating MCED testing in current workflows, including identifying patients who are appropriate candidates for MCED testing, addressing patient concerns, and interpreting results. A guide to discussing MCED testing with patients is also provided.

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  • Describe available evidence related to the benefits and limitations of MCED tests
  • Address common patient concerns related to MCED testing through education and counseling
  • Engage patients in conversations about MCED testing when appropriate

Statement of Need:
Although novel therapies have improved patient outcomes in many tumor types, cancer is currently the second-most common cause of death. Many cancers are diagnosed at advanced stages, representing a substantial unmet need of diagnosing cancer earlier in the disease course when treatment is more effective. MCED tests have the potential to enhance routine preventive care strategies through their ability to detect multiple cancer types using a single blood draw. Family medicine physicians serve as the first point of access to care and are uniquely positioned to foster the early detection of various conditions, including cancer. With the emergence of MCED testing, it is important for physicians to understand emerging clinical data related to how MCED tests detect cancer and their potential place in the current cancer screening paradigm.
