Needs Statement:
Healthy People 2010 defines health literacy as “The degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.”More simply, the NIH says health literacy “Saves Lives. Saves Time. Saves Money”. This presentation explores the impact of health literacy and identifies strategies to facilitate disease management in individuals with limited health literacy.
Objectives:
• Describe health literacy in the context of personal health and explain how this skill set determines an individuals’ self-care competencies.
• Apply the principles of health literacy to a new illness context in order to deconstruct the patient role in disease self-management.
• Identify 4 health system targets of health literacy interventions and how they could be deployed in an ambulatory or acute care health system.
• Explain how emerging health technologies could both facilitate individuals with limited health literacy as well as exacerbate known disparities.
Additional details will be posted as soon as they are available.
