The target audience for this medical event is Primary Care Providers. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
Course Description:
This monograph will provide information about gout or hyperuricemia, a condition which is often asymptomatic and is known to be associated with adverse outcomes, can be misdiagnosed or the diagnosis not adequately established. Case studies are presented throughout the monograph which will highlight the need for needle aspiration for diagnosis of gout confirmed by the presence in the joint fluid of MSU crystals, characterized by a needle-like appearance, with negative birefringence on polarized microscopy. Appropriate use of urate lowering drugs for effective and FDA approved treatments for acute gout attacks. The clinical trial data demonstrating effective maintenance of long term uric acid levels less than 6 and the latest ACR guidelines for target uric acid levels for preventing recurrent gout attacks will be reviewed. Emphasis is placed ways to implement appropriate pharmacologic therapeutic strategies and on optimizing treatment options for safety and improved patient outcomes.
Conference Objectives are:
• Describe management approaches for obtaining a definitive diagnosis of gout
• Develop individualized treatment plans for treatment of acute gout flares
• Apply new American College of Rheumatology guidelines for target uric acid level goals for long-term urate lowering therapy
• Implement appropriate pharmacotherapy to effectively maintain target uric acid levels on a long-term basis
