Course Overview:
This lecture covers ethical issues relating to the treatment of substance use disorders. Confidentiality issues, including federal regulations, those relating to adolescents, use of EMR, and implications of Tarasoff are covered.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this activity the learner should be more competent in applying appropriate ethical and confidentiality principles, laws and regulations to the practice of addiction medicine, including the following:
• HIPPA regulations pertaining to confidentiality, for under-age minor versus adult patients, specifically concerning addiction and mental health disorders.
• Concepts and regulations relating to record-keeping, patient privacy, and security of records, including the limitations and privacy expectations of 42CFR in integrated settings.
• Discussion of ethical issues specific to the field of addiction medicine.
