OVERVIEW

Epilepsy is increasingly recognized not just as a discrete neurological disorder but as a prototype system disease—offering vital insights into the mechanisms that underlie a wide array of brain pathologies. This CME/CE course examines epilepsy through a systemic lens, providing a multidimensional view of how seizure disorders relate to neurodevelopmental, vascular, neurodegenerative, and traumatic brain conditions.

Participants will explore the shared cellular, genetic, and network-level dysfunctions common to epilepsy and other neurological diseases. From excitotoxicity and neuroinflammation to impaired synaptic transmission and neural plasticity, the course highlights how similar pathways contribute to diverse conditions such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury, and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The epileptic process—comprising ictogenesis, epileptogenesis, and seizure propagation—is reviewed to contextualize the dynamic changes that make the brain more prone to seizures. Understanding this process enables clinicians to detect early markers of disease, guide treatment choices, and explore the implications of epilepsy as a comorbidity or consequence of other systemic neurological insults.

By examining epilepsy as a model for broader neurological dysfunction, the course enhances the learner’s ability to identify interdisciplinary diagnostic strategies, coordinate care across specialties, and approach epilepsy management within the framework of chronic disease.
