Activity Overview:
This activity presents an overview of medications that address the psychiatric needs of the geriatric population. It presents the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and shows how medications address psychosis. However, the elderly is at risk of increased antipsychotic sensitivity. As such, special drug considerations are made when prescribing and administering antipsychotics and mood stabilizers to older adults.

At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the prevalence and pathophysiology of schizophrenia
• Identify the side effect profiles of first-generation antipsychotics among the elderly
• Discuss the role of second-generation antipsychotics
• Compare the effects of different mood stabilizers in the treatment of a bipolar disorder
