Description:
In the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) era, steroids, laser, and vitrectomy still play important roles in the management of diabetic macular edema (DME). There are different types of VEGF blockade agents, along with various types of steroids and laser modes. Clinical trials have tested and recommended certain protocols, but applying the conclusions and results of these trials to daily practice can be challenging. Physicians may lack knowledge about the use of multimodal therapies in the treatment of DME. In this continuing medical education activity, expert physicians review the role of inflammation, as well as examine multimodal therapies, in the treatment of DME.

Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
• Review the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of DME.
• Evaluate the use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) monotherapy and multimodal management options for the treatment of DME.
