Dementia Therapies and Interventions is organized by University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) and will be held from Dec 12, 2017 - Dec 12, 2019.
The target audience for this medical event is healthcare professionals, RN, LVN, LNFA, SW, LPC, and Home Health Caregivers in three types of care settings: facility-based staff, home health caregivers, and primary care physician office staff. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 0.75 contact hours.
Course Description:
Studies have found that more than 90% of people with dementia will experience behavioral and psychotic symptoms during the course of their disease progression. Due to a lack of FDA approved drug treatments for behavioral and psychotic symptoms, atypical antipsychotics have been the first line of treatment for many years. Evidence shows that antipsychotics have limited effectiveness and increase the risk for mortality and cerebrovascular events among users with dementia. Substantial evidence shows that nonpharmacological approaches can yield high levels of patient and caregiver satisfaction, quality of life improvements, and reductions in behavioral symptoms. This video addresses the appropriate use of medication in dementia care and discusses best practices in nonpharmacologic therapies and implementation in standard dementia care.
This program is the second in a three-part series that will address deficiencies in healthcare professional knowledge/competence related to Alzheimer’s disease, dementia and the role of the Healthcare Professional.
Course Objectives are :
• Explain the use and efficacy of the FDA approved Alzheimer’s disease medications;
• Discuss and evaluate the appropriate use and efficacy for off-label and antipsychotic medications in treating Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias;
• Evaluate best practices in nonpharmacological therapies for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias;
• Assess and discuss best practices for implementing culture change in long-term care settings and making it a part of standard dementia care;
• Identify at least three community resources.
