Course Description
Dementia in the older adult has become a major health concern. Resources, both human and financial, are challenged; the older adult population is growing by nearly 1.6 million a year, an increase projected to continue over the next 20 years. People older than age 65 represented 12.4% of the population in the year 2000 but are expected to be 19% of the population by 2030. The U.S. Census Bureau projects that by 2030, there will be about 72.1 million people age 65 and older -- more than twice the number in 2000. There were an estimated 5.2 million Americans with dementia in 2014. Caring for the older adult with dementia requires a strong knowledge of senior health issues and resources as well as excellent team skills. Today's healthcare professional faces unprecedented challenges in providing compassionate care with a focus on dignity and quality of life, while juggling a heavily regulated system and dealing with reductions in staff and resources. This educational activity provides the background information needed to increase healthcare professionals' understanding about dementia, its causes and management and their important role in providing care.

Conference Objectives:
The goal of this continuing education program is to enable nurses and social workers to better recognize dementia and manage the care of older adults with dementia.
