Description:
The promise and future of genetic and genomic medicine hinges on the ability to overcome the multiple and chronic access barriers. The well-documented workforce shortage results in long wait times for an initial appointment and often traveling long distances to receive care. This barrier, among others, are a driving force in evolving practice models whereby nongenetic frontline providers (e.g., primary care providers - PCP, specialists and Advanced Practice Practitioners – APP) are integrating limited genetics services into their practice.
Although genetic tests are infrequently (albeit increasingly) ordered by frontline providers, their patients’ ability to access genetic testing through alternate paths (outside institutions, research participation and direct-to consumer commercial entities) is expanding. Genetic testing performed externally may not include: an explanation of the findings, whether they are diagnostic, implications to the individual or their family or identification of next steps .  In such cases, the patient will likely seek guidance from their medical providers.  However, many PCPs report insufficient knowledge, skills and confidence in integrating genetics into their clinical practice and desire additional training.
This activity will prepare frontline providers to respond to patient inquiries regarding their, or their family member's genetic test report.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
• Define basic genetic terms and concepts relating to genetic test reports including variant classification
• Differentiate between genetic test reports obtained through multiple models
• Identify whether genetic test results are diagnostic and clinically actionable
• Identify clinician resources
