Summary:
Pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is a neurologic syndrome of emotional affect disinhibition, characterized by frequent, uncontrollable emotional outbursts of crying and/or laughing that are usually exaggerated and inappropriate to the stimulus, and may be mood incongruent. Some patients may also display outbursts of anger or frustration. PBA occurs in association with a variety of neurological diseases, and may cause severe distress, embarrassment, and social dysfunction. This activity will review the epidemiology and impact of PBA and examine the diagnostic criteria and evidence-based therapies to effectively manage your patients with PBA.

This webcast was recorded live at the Emerging Challenges in Primary Care 2019 Live Virtual Symposium and is being used with the permission of the presenters.

• Discuss the importance of early recognition of PBA in the primary care, nursing home, and rehabilitation settings
• Describe diagnostic tools and criteria for objective diagnosis of PBA
• Utilize evidence-based therapies to effectively manage PBA
