Goals and Objectives:
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and is second only to lung cancer as a cause of cancer-related death. Ovarian cancer, which accounts for only 3% of reproductive tract cancers, causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of death globally and accounts for approximately 4000 U.S. deaths per year. Preventing death is the goal of cancer screening; but screen-related morbidity and cost effectiveness should also be considered. This lecture will review current screening guidelines for breast and cervical cancer and explore current and potential ovarian screening methods in both low and high-risk groups. Upon completion of the activity, providers should be able to:
• Interpret and apply the current clinical guidelines for breast and cervical cancer screening;
• Employ a strategy to manage “dense breasts” results on mammograms;
• Utilize algorithms for identifying high risk populations for each cancer;
• Counsel women about ovarian cancer screenings;
• Recognize available “apps” which summarize recommendations.
