Course Description:
This course provides nurses with an overview of fetal cardiac development, the transition of cardiopulmonary circulation that occurs in a neonate post-birth, early presenting congenital heart defects, and the nursing care required for these neonates and their families. Transposition of the great arteries, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, obstructed total anomalous pulmonary venous return, and tetralogy of Fallot are discussed.

Goal and Learning Outcomes:
The goal of this program is to provide nurses with an overview of fetal cardiac development, the transition of cardiopulmonary circulation that occurs in a neonate post-birth, early presenting congenital heart defects, and the nursing care required for these neonates and their families. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
• Describe normal fetal cardiac development and the transition of cardiopulmonary circulation that occurs post-birth
• Describe three congenital cardiac defects that present in the newborn period
• Identify nursing interventions in the care of a neonate with congenital heart defects
