Description:
Compounding Law and Patient Safety is a self-guided continuing education program that is available to all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Learn the fundamentals of establishing and maintaining a regulatory compliant compounding pharmacy and building a culture of quality patient safety within your pharmacy practice. This course includes essential information about the comprehensive approach to the implementation of required compounding laws, regulations and patient safety guidelines associated with building and maintaining a compounding pharmacy focused on compliance throughout the organization.
Objectives:
- Define the legal requirements and regulations specific to a compounding pharmacy and dispensing compounded preparations.
- Describe methods for assuring patient safety including products, preparations and compounding practices.
- Identify strategies to enhance patient safety including collaboration with healthcare colleagues.
- Describe record keeping required in compounding, including standard operating procedures, master formulations, compounding logs, sourcing ingredients and error prevention as it relates to legal requirements and patient safety.

In support of improving patient care, VCU Health Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Note for Pharmacists: VCU Health Continuing Education will upload the pharmacy-related continuing education information to CPE Monitor within 60 days of activity completion. Per ACPE rules, VCU Health Continuing Education does not have access nor the ability to upload credits requested more than 60 days after activity completion. It is the responsibility of the pharmacist or pharmacy technician to provide the correct information [NABP ePID and DOB (in MMDD format)] in order to receive credit for participating in a continuing education activity.
