OVERVIEW

Clinical Teaching Essentials is organized by Baylor College of Medicine (BCM).

Course opens: 01/01/2024
Course expires: 12/31/2026

Description:
The structure of this activity will provide on-demand virtual modules and application exercises on skills and abilities supporting faculty training students and residents in clinical environments that exist in both urban and rural healthcare settings. It will mitigate gaps in knowledge and ability by faculty in selected topics for instruction and training that were identified by a needs assessment of faculty in a recent survey of programs such as family medicine and also are consistently identified by clinical trainees as areas for improvement in clinical teaching. The development of asynchronous e-learning modules with application exercises will support both individual and group approaches towards learning. Major topics to be addressed are setting expectations with residents, resident feedback and assessment, impatient teaching, outpatient teaching, and giving effective lectures and presentations. Additional topics may be added as needs are further identified.

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe common frameworks for providing formal or informal feedback to clinical trainees.
  • Describe techniques and effective behaviors used by clinician educators to facilitate effective teaching during inpatient rounds.
  • Identify approaches and effective behaviors to facilitate effective instruction of learners on managing outpatient care.
  • Identify and define the important components of providing effective lectures/presentations with a focus on clinical education and clinical practice environments.
